Hardwood Floor Refinishing…. Old to New!

Many areas are fortunate to have hardwood floors installed years ago, but they will lose their luster and show signs of wear over time. Whether your floors are newly installed or a century old, sanding and refinishing can bring out the beauty and elegance of the wood, often surpassing their original condition.

Opting to restore your wood floors provides a fresh look and ensures durability that can last for many years, even decades. By investing in refinishing, you are not just choosing a temporary fix but a long-term solution that enhances the beauty and value of your property.

Why Hardwood Refinish

Freshly refinished hardwood floors are a popular choice among homeowners because of their natural, timeless, non-toxic, and aesthetically pleasing features. Compared to other floor coverings, wood floors are of high quality and add warmth to any room. They are relatively easy to maintain and clean, making them an ideal option for people with allergies. Refinishing hardwood floors is a more cost-effective solution than replacing them, as the floor is designed to be repaired and maintained throughout its lifespan. Therefore, refinishing is an expected aspect of owning a genuine wood floor.

The Environment

Refinishing Sustainability

Did you know that refinishing hardwood floors is more sustainable than replacing hardwood floors?

Refinishing a small floor of 50 square meters offers 90 percent energy savings and 65 percent carbon savings compared to new floor replacement. The floor renovation process can be even greener by using waterborne finishes, low VOC stains, and dust containment systems. Best of all, using a floor refinishing specialist ensures the floor renovation project will be done correctly every time. So instead of tearing out that old floor which will most likely end up in the landfill, you can refinish the floor, which is even better for our environment.

Canadian sanders can refinish hand-scraped hardwood flooring in red and white oak, maple, birch, beech, ash, hickory, and walnut wood flooring to homeowners, business owners, interior designers, and installers.

Description

The Refinishing Process

Refinishing hardwood floors involves several major steps. Below is a brief description of the restoration process.

Step One

Preparing the room

Before refinishing the floors, all furniture must be removed. Equipment is brought into the work areas, including dust containment vacuums and tools needed to complete the renovation.

Step Two

Repair Floor Boards

We will take care of any damaged parts of your floor by fixing them as needed. If there are any loose boards, we will remove them and put them back in place securely. We will also cover the surrounding area with protective sheets to avoid any damage or mess.

Step Three

Remove Existing Finshing

Next, we will sand the top layer of your floor until it becomes raw wood again. During the sanding process, we will carefully remove the least amount of wood possible based on your floor’s condition, such as scratches, stains, or dents.

Step Five

Apply Filler

After sanding, we will vacuum the floor and apply a light coat of wood filler which is then fine-sanded off the surface.

Step Five

Apply Sealer and Finish

Once the floor is thoroughly sanded and polished, we will apply three commercial finishes to give it a smooth, modern look. Before the final coat, we will finely sand the floor again to ensure it is as smooth as possible. You can choose between three finishes: matte, satin, or gloss. If you want your floor to look better over time, we recommend choosing a less shiny finish, as these finishes tend to wear better.

Other Important Info

Maintaining hardwood floors requires careful consideration, as excessive sanding can compromise the longevity of the flooring. The tongue and groove, which holds the planks together, can only withstand a limited amount of sanding before it becomes too thin. Once this limit has been reached, sanding down to raw wood is no longer possible. In such cases, you can either opt for a re-coating service or replace the entire floor. To avoid causing damage to your floors, it’s best to minimize wood removal during floor refinishing.

Top Questions.....

Does Hardwood Refinishing Smell?

Please be advised that during the refinishing process of hardwood floors, it is possible to encounter an odor that may resemble that of water-based indoor paints. However, once the floor has cured, you can rest assured that there will be no odor emanating from any of our products.

In the past, oil-based urethane was commonly used for hardwood floor refinishing, which had a strong and unpleasant odor that would linger for several weeks. This was a significant concern during the refinishing process. However, our hardwood refinishing products are not only safe to use but also low-odor, making them completely harmless to both your family and workers.

The Time It Takes to Refinish Floor

he duration of sanding and refinishing hardwood floors can typically range from 2-5 days. However, several factors such as the size of the area, previous sanding history, prefinished floor status, and the need for extensive repairs can affect the duration of your hardwood flooring refinishing project. To receive the most accurate breakdown of costs and timeline required for your project, please schedule an in-home consultation.
